A sensory experience along the paths of the Berignone Woods nature reserve, beyond the “Vena di Vino” venue and outside the walls of the historic center of Volterra. We will discover the origins of the distillates collection “Spirits of the Woods” (Spiriti del Bosco).
Surrounded by the Mediterranean scrub, we will learn about the plant species from which it all begins. We will observe plant shapes and colored berries, touching different leaves to unlock the scents of the forest. The same scents that our in a glass, when we find ourselves at the bar absent mindedly sipping a drink.
We will describe the liquor-making process and tell the forgotten history of the Volterra distillery (and the gin) that inspired the creation of the ‘Spirits of the Woods”. The spirits tasting will take place where nature and history intertwine, where the connection between man and resources ties past and present.
Some story about Spirits of the forest
Spiriti del Bosco is the alcoholic creations project by
‘La Vena di Vino’ in Volterra, Tuscany, a working-class luxury bar for over twenty years.
The registered trademark comes from the love for our land and the wish to pass on its historical memories and ancient recipes to the future. ‘Spiriti del Bosco’ is a small production and our ingredients are
carefully collected, and certified, from the natural areas of the Alta Val di Cecina guaranteeing the quality and originality of our spirits.
It all started with the forgotten distillery of Caprareccia, opened in 1851 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopoldo II.
We had the pleasure of rediscovering this story from documented
historical sources. Gin from Volterra, produced in the Berignone Woods, reached the major fairs of the time: from the first Italian Exposition in Florence in 1861 to the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
No one knew this story.
Its memory had been lost in time.

The hike in the woods, with licensed Nature Hiking Guide, will be along dirt roads and forest trail paths, with slight uphill slope in some sections. Suitable clothing and shoes are recommended

The price does not include lunch at La Vena di Vino Bar , and the visit to Volterra with the tour guide which must be booked in advance if you are interested. You can also choose lunch only or just the visit to Volterra and choose to have lunch wherever you want in the beautiful center of Volterra.
I recommend you to try lunch at Bar La Vena di vino , the owner is the Gin producer, you will taste typical Tuscan dishes and excellent wines. You can choose between a set menu and an a la carte menu
